Summary

Naomi Novik's triumphant debut, His Majesty's Dragon, introduced a dynamic new pair of heroes to the annals of fantasy fiction: the noble fighting dragon Temeraire and his master and commander, Capt。 Will Laurence。 Now in the latest novel, they soar to new heights of breathtaking action and brilliant imagination。

It is a grim time for the dragon Temeraire。 On the heels of his mission to Africa, seeking the cure for a deadly contagion, he has been removed from military service - and his captain, Will Laurence, has been condemned to death for treason。 For Britain, conditions are grimmer still: Napoleon's resurgent forces have breached the Channel and successfully invaded English soil。 Napoleon's prime objective: the occupation of London。

Separated by their own government and threatened at every turn by Napoleon's forces, Laurence and Temeraire must struggle to find each other amid the turmoil of war and to aid the resistance against the invasion before Napoleon's foothold on England's shores can become a stranglehold。

If only they can be reunited, master and dragon might rally Britain's scattered forces and take the fight to the enemy as never before - for king and country, and for their own liberty。 But can the French aggressors be well and truly routed, or will a treacherous alliance deliver Britain into the hands of her would-be conquerors?

One of the best ones yet for sure。 I particularly enjoyed the way Wellington was depicted。 It was a nice, fast paced book that was enjoyable from beginning to end。 I'm looking forward to reading the next one! It’s absolutely no surprise that I loved Victory of Eagles, the fifth installment of the Temeraire series – an alternate reality in which dragons are the aerial force during the Napoleonic Wars。 The further along in this series I get, the more I’m already coming to consider it a comfort read。 Personally, I find this a more subtle and slower-paced fantasy read than a lot of what I gravitate towards, even though it touches on heavy topics such as class disparity, death, slavery, racism, and more。 It’s absolutely no surprise that I loved Victory of Eagles, the fifth installment of the Temeraire series – an alternate reality in which dragons are the aerial force during the Napoleonic Wars。 The further along in this series I get, the more I’m already coming to consider it a comfort read。 Personally, I find this a more subtle and slower-paced fantasy read than a lot of what I gravitate towards, even though it touches on heavy topics such as class disparity, death, slavery, racism, and more。 While the plot touches on all these points, and takes place during wartime, the beauty of this series comes from Laurence and Temeraire’s endearing bond。 I loved how this book ended by mirroring the origins of Laurence and Temeraire’s story。 You can tell quite clearly that we’ve reached the middle of the series, with this book largely dealing with the fallout of Book Four and setting the stage for something a bit different in Book Six。 I’m eager to find out what Novik has in store for what I think has become my favourite dragon-rider pair。CW: Class disparity, death, imprisonment, slavery, racism 。。。more

Characters: 4*Plot: 3*Universe: 5*Still a great read and I'm going directly into the next book, but something about this book felt less fun than the previous books in the series。 There was character growth and the overall world was progressed and I appreciate the morality of the world, but the morality just feels a bit heavy handed too me。 Not enough to make the book not worth reading, but I'm pretty sure there are no readers that will miss the tale of morality due to the lack of subtlety。 Characters: 4*Plot: 3*Universe: 5*Still a great read and I'm going directly into the next book, but something about this book felt less fun than the previous books in the series。 There was character growth and the overall world was progressed and I appreciate the morality of the world, but the morality just feels a bit heavy handed too me。 Not enough to make the book not worth reading, but I'm pretty sure there are no readers that will miss the tale of morality due to the lack of subtlety。 。。。more

While I love this series, I also want to shake Laurence hard。 I love him and despair of him。 Temeraire, buddy, I hope you don’t throw your talons up in the air and fly off。

A cheer for TemeraireThese well realized characters continue to compel my interest。 The what if factor in this fantastic history shine all the brighter in this one。 I loved every second of it。

This series is like a sitcom, you come back because you want to spend time with your favorite characters。 The story is uneven, some books are much better than others and sometimes it doesn’t seem to have much of a point。 But the world is still a lot of fun to spend time in, the little hijinks and inside jokes pop up when you need them and even when I feel reluctant to start the next one (books 3-4 nearly kept me from continuing on) it always draws me in。

。。。more

3。5 starsI feel that listening to Simon Vance narrate this series is like wrapping myself in my favourite blanket。 This is my comfort series, I forget the real world and just focus on enjoying Temeraire and Laurence's banter and adventures。However, this book wasn't quite as comforting as the first 4 in the series, primarily because it took on a darker and grimmer tone than the others。 This wasn't surprising considering how the fourth one ended, I knew that this book would primarily focus on grap 3。5 starsI feel that listening to Simon Vance narrate this series is like wrapping myself in my favourite blanket。 This is my comfort series, I forget the real world and just focus on enjoying Temeraire and Laurence's banter and adventures。However, this book wasn't quite as comforting as the first 4 in the series, primarily because it took on a darker and grimmer tone than the others。 This wasn't surprising considering how the fourth one ended, I knew that this book would primarily focus on grappling with the many consequences, but I still found myself missing the duo's iconic banter and camaraderie。 Instead of focusing on Laurence and Temeraire as a duo, I felt that this book focused more on Temeraire and his growth as a leader。 There were still many instances where his interactions with his fellow dragons made me crack a smile。 Novik has managed to strike that balance perfectly between making the dragons intelligent and fearsome and yet so adorably naïve at times。 I hope that Temeraire never loses his way of seeing the world。I don't blame Novik for making this book darker than the others, but I can't say that I enjoyed it quite as much as the others。 I'll keep reading this series though, I'm pretty sure that I'd follow Laurence and Temeraire to the ends of the Earth。 I'm already dreading finishing the ninth book and not having any more adventures to follow them through。I'm fine people, I swear I'm fine。 I'm most definitely not crying at the thought of finishing the series。 。。。more

A combination of my favourite and least favourite sides of the series。 My favourite : just the dragons being their crazy selves, and beginning to organise and demand more rights。 Getting to see more of their behaviour is hilarious。My least favourite is the battles。 I am also sad that Laurence now thinks so little of himself, it's enraging to see how he is treated。I'm curious to see where things go next。 A combination of my favourite and least favourite sides of the series。 My favourite : just the dragons being their crazy selves, and beginning to organise and demand more rights。 Getting to see more of their behaviour is hilarious。My least favourite is the battles。 I am also sad that Laurence now thinks so little of himself, it's enraging to see how he is treated。I'm curious to see where things go next。 。。。more

Novik does a great job at considering the many complications caused by the actions of the protagonists。 Many authors skim over what the hero decides to do and everything works out in the end。 Here Laurence and Temeraire continue to feel the effects of providing the cure to the dragon illness to the French。 They also have to deal with the repercussions of dragons being recognized as more than animals。 The world isn’t ready for these two and the growing pains are real。 The book is well written and Novik does a great job at considering the many complications caused by the actions of the protagonists。 Many authors skim over what the hero decides to do and everything works out in the end。 Here Laurence and Temeraire continue to feel the effects of providing the cure to the dragon illness to the French。 They also have to deal with the repercussions of dragons being recognized as more than animals。 The world isn’t ready for these two and the growing pains are real。 The book is well written and crucial to the ongoing story。 There is necessary growth and understanding。 Like a child frustrated with turning into a young adult, it isn’t my favorite age to deal with, but I still care about it。 。。。more

😅 。。。more

What makes this series great is that ultimately Novik is using all the imaginative devices in order to explore the ways in which people treat those they see as inferior。 She wants to talk about what's right and wrong and what doesn't fit easily into either category。 She addresses the power of the state, the entrenched interests that make moral victories rare and dear, the arbitrariness of national loyalty。This particular book was notable for its getting inside the head of Temeraire, not just Lau What makes this series great is that ultimately Novik is using all the imaginative devices in order to explore the ways in which people treat those they see as inferior。 She wants to talk about what's right and wrong and what doesn't fit easily into either category。 She addresses the power of the state, the entrenched interests that make moral victories rare and dear, the arbitrariness of national loyalty。This particular book was notable for its getting inside the head of Temeraire, not just Laurence。 The dragon's voice is so lovable, so intelligent and yet credulous in a heart-breaking way。 He has a child's certainty that people will always come around to a fair argument sincerely made - and to see him disappointed really brings home every injustice。 。。。more

I almost rated it 4 stars because I'm not a fan of book battles that focus on battlefield strategy, but there was a LOT of other great stuff going on in this book。 It starts in a very high stakes situation for Laurence but takes time to build a lot of good story around Temeraire too。 That kind of balance is hard to strike but this one struck it。 Despite the overall grim tone of the story and all the strategizing, it was entertaining and it made me gasp and yell "NO!" a lot。 👍 I almost rated it 4 stars because I'm not a fan of book battles that focus on battlefield strategy, but there was a LOT of other great stuff going on in this book。 It starts in a very high stakes situation for Laurence but takes time to build a lot of good story around Temeraire too。 That kind of balance is hard to strike but this one struck it。 Despite the overall grim tone of the story and all the strategizing, it was entertaining and it made me gasp and yell "NO!" a lot。 👍 。。。more

This was an improvement over the last two。 Things flowed a lot more naturally and there was action throughout。 It didn't drag, it wasn't confusing as to what was happening, it just worked。I was a bit tired of constantly rehashing the same argument with Temeraire and having to function within the command structure。 Maybe it's a side effect of how fast I read and so I was reading this argument again thinking, "Didn't I just read this tonight?" Inventive and introspective at times even but also suffers a bit from being a necessary “slow down” entry in the series。

Yes!!! This is what I’ve been looking for in this series! That doesn’t excuse it’s other flaws, but I really enjoyed this one - surprising, considering how the last book ended。 It was really wonderful for Temeraire to finally get his own chance to speak, and also wreaking further chaos among the dragons。 Laurence was still vaguely irritating in his upright moral way, but I also can’t entirely blame him because every time he and T do something absolutely grand the admiralty comes along and whacks Yes!!! Guess we’ll see。 PS: really need to look up actual historic info about Napoleon and the war, the book is pretty vague on anything besides his war tactics and treatment of dragons。 I’m finding it hard not to root for him? Whoops。 (I mean, he’s not the one who decided biological warfare was a-okay and tried to commit genocide) 。。。more
